Ruling on an inadvertent intercourse during periods

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته May Allaah bless you, during the periods, although it was just cuddling, we happened to have intercourse noticing that the bleeding paused for a time but came into awareness after seeing the blood. The husband was not in his senses while the wife was in confusion whether the bleeding has stopped completely or not because they were expecting pregnancy. The wife knew the rulings of intercouse during periods and that it's haraam but didn't stop her husband when he came into her. What is the ruling upon the wife and the husband? Note: The husband wasn't in his senses. He did it sahwan (سهوا) while the wife was drowned in doubts and wasawis. وجزاكم الله خيرا.

Having intercourse during the menses is a major sin and Tawbah is needed if someone has done so intentionally -

You expected pregnancy, you were dried and you assumed it was false blood - later on you realized it was menses. There is no sin upon you since you were not aware of the reality of the blood -

If it is as mentioned above- no sin upon you. If you and your husband knew it was period and you insisted of having intercourse, then sincere repentance is needed from both you and your partner.
