Question
Assalamu Alaikum Dear Sir, Sometimes when I browse through social media, many people like to show-off and post new things they buy or places they go and deep down I feel really jealous. Although I try to control myself from feeling bitter, it just happens naturally. Can you share some light on how to avoid having these thoughts and how can I make myself feel content? Jazak Allahu Khair
Answer
Wa'alaykumsalaam Wa Rahmatullah.

Jealousy is indeed a trait of human and Satan is here to ignite it and take advantage of it if we do not control it.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, do not be jealous of one another.'

“And Allah has favored some of you over others in provision. But those who were favored would not hand over their provision to those whom their right hands possess so they would be equal to them therein. Then is it the favor of Allah they reject? [16:71]”

Jealousy is not only discouraged in Islam but the following Hadith states clearly that the jealousy factor burns all the good deeds of a person. Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him said, "Beware of jealousy, for verily it destroys good deeds the way fire destroys wood." [Abu Dawood]

So, as mentioned above verse is that Whatever you have got, is from Allah. Whatever they are having is from Allah. Allah knows what you need and He knows when and how to give it to you.

The more you are jealous, the more you put evil eye on them and this goes against the teachings of Islam

Therefore, my advice is when you see any of these blessings, ask Allah to protect them from it and always put in your mind that the provisions is from Allah, if i ask Allah, He will give me.

So be content of what you have in shaa Allah and ask Allah for His blessings and He will give you.

Allah knows best
