Question
Bismillah Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabaraktuhu Please give attention to this answer considering the culture and the situation of the brother. A brother In the UK wants to invest in a franchise of opening up a Shell Petrol station. The Shell company has said that he needs to sell Alcohol in his shop (although it is mainly a petrol station but they also have a small shop with basic necessities people can stop over and buy) He told them he can’t do that. But they are not barging, so they gave him an option that is he can give part of his shop to someone else to run it within the shop. And he has to find that person they will not. I feel like may be if they give a person from themselves then it would be fine for him to run that shop with the alcohol guy on the side. But for him to seek a person He might become blame worthy. Please tell me how this issue can be solved where he can have the petrol station and yet not displease his Lord?
Answer
Wa'alaykumsalaam Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakaatouh.

If he may give this part of the alcohol department to a non Muslim and he won't be dealing with any of the revenue of the Alcohol, then he may do that.

But if the money of the alcohol will be part of his whole revenue, then he should not indulge in anything that is related to alcohol.

Al-Tirmidhi (1295) narrated that Anas ibn Maalik said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed ten with regard to alcohol: the one who squeezes (the grapes etc), the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who drinks it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who pours it, the one who sells it and consumes its price, the one who buys it and the one for whom it is bought.”

I would advice not to indulge in a business that may bring the anger and wrath of Allah.

Allah knows best
