Question
Sheikh if someone didn’t know that masturbation was prohibited. And they used to do it and after doing it they did not do ghusul and they don’t know for how long they have been doing that. Mostly likely in the years. What should be done in that case regarding the prayers he prayed without doing ghusul Jazakallah khair
Answer
Assalaamou'alaikoum Wa Rahmatullah.

Firstly, since you know that it is haraam now, it is compulsory upon you to ask forgiveness from Allah. Allah The Almighty is The Most Forgiving and He shall forgive you in shaa Allah.

Secondly,

If a person makes a promise then forgets it unintentionally, there is no sin on him, because Allaah has forgiven this ummah for what they forget, as is indicated by the texts. For example, the last two verses of Soorat al-Baqarah (interpretation of the meaning):

“Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error”

[al-Baqarah 2:286]

And Allaah has said: “I have done that.” (Narrated by Muslim)

So, all the prayers that you have done without knowing that ghusl was needed, since you did not know, you won't be responsible for the prayers that you missed or prayed without purification.

Seek Allah's forgiveness and be punctual in your prayers in shaa Allah...

Allah says: “Say: O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Sûrah al-Zumar: 53]

Allah knows best
