Question
Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi-Allahu 'anhu): The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "A man saw a dog eating mud from (the severity of) thirst. So, that man took a shoe (and filled it) with water and kept on pouring the water for the dog till it quenched its thirst. So Allah approved of his deed and made him to enter Paradise." And narrated Hamza bin 'Abdullah: My father said. "During the lifetime of Allah's Apostle, the dogs used to urinate, and pass through the mosques (come and go), nevertheless they never used to sprinkle water on it (urine of the dog.)" Bukhari Vol. 1 : No. 174 -- Please confirm is this authenticated ? Explain Second part of hadeeth ? is it ok to keep a dog as a pet for Muslim ?
Answer
First of all, this hadeeth is authentic.

secondly, the first hadeeth shows the mercy of this men towards an animal, it does not mean that a dog can be kept as pet.
Mercy should be showed to all creatures of Allah. That is why Allah show His mercy on him.

Thirdly, The second hadeeth mentions about dog passing through the masjid,
remember that the masjid was open at the beginning of the Madinah era and it was built in the middle of the desert where animals would be passing by here and there.
The dog urinated in the masjid and it was kept without sprinkling water on it, this is because to let it dry out. Anything that is dried out in regards to purity is pure.

If water would be poured on it, it would leave it humid and leads to impurity.

It is not permissible for a Muslim to keep dogs except in cases such as guarding the farm or important causes.
